Sharon Thormahlen

thormahlen sharonAfter playing guitar while growing up, and bass in a 4 piece swing band, Sharon has found her passion in playing the harp. She is best known to the harp community as a composer and arranger with 10 books published by Afghan Press. Sharon hails from Corvallis, Oregon, where as "Thormahlen Harps," she and her husband, Dave, build some of the most beautiful harps in North America. They have a daughter, a dog and love to sail and hike.

Sharon has made one of her original tunes, "A Rose In Winter," available for members. As a composer, she has a way of weaving rhythms with very distinct melodies and harmonies creating simple arrangements that are haunting, evocative and beautiful. It is music you can get lost in. This particular selection was written in Eb but if your harp is tuned in C, it can be played in E by putting up your F, C, G and D levers. There are no lever changes within the tune.

This tune has a double meaning for Sharon: "I wrote it for Evelyn whom I met in a nursing home. She was one of my biggest fans and I one of hers. Even in the winter of her life, she was a beautiful, blooming rose. My daughter's name is Rose and she was born in January, the heart of winter.
